FAQs - Dermal Fillers

The following information has been excerpted from the literature provided by the manufacturer

Juvederm®

Q: What is Juvederm® ?

A: Juvederm® is an injectable gel that instantly smoothes out wrinkles or folds that look like parentheses along the sides of your nose and mouth. It can also be used to fill thinning lips and the hollows beneath eyes.

Q: Can Juvederm® dermal filler work for me?

A: Talk to your doctor about your medical history when deciding on treatment options. You should not use Juvederm® dermal filler if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Q: How does it work?

A: Juvederm® is made from hyaluronic acid which is a natural complex sugar found in all living cells and one of the major components in the dermal layer of the skin. Hyaluronic acid retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1000 times its weight. This helps to attract and maintain water, hydrating your skin and increasing its volume and density.

Q: How long does it last?

A: Juvederm lasts for up to six months or longer.

Radiesse®

Q: What is RADIESSE® ?

A: RADIESSE® dermal filler is an injectable gel used to help correct facial folds and wrinkles. It is used to fill moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds—the creases that extend from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth. RADIESSE filler will not correct the underlying causes.

Q: Can RADIESSE® dermal filler work for me?

A: Talk to your doctor about your medical history when deciding on treatment options. You should not use RADIESSE® dermal filler if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You should also not choose RADIESSE® filler if you desire only short-term results.

Q: How does RADIESSE® dermal filler work?

A: Once injected, RADIESSE® dermal filler immediately adds fullness to your face giving you a visible result at the first treatment session. RADIESSE filler contains microspheres made of a natural material called Calcium Hydroxylapatite in a water based gel carrier. These microspheres help to stimulate collagen in the treated area.

Q: How long do treatment effects last?

A: Although treatment effects will differ for each person, in a clinical study, RADIESSE®  dermal filler lasted up to six months.  Persons receiving touch up treatments 3-4 months after initial treatment may have results last up to 18 months.

General FAQ’S Dermal Fillers

Q: Are skin tests needed before treatment?

A:  No skin testing is required prior to use.

Q: What are the side effects?

A: The most commonly reported side effects are temporary injection site redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, and bruising. These symptoms usually resolve within a couple of hours to a couple of days.

Q:  Should I tell my healthcare provider what medications I am taking?

A: Yes. You should tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, even over the counter medicines or treatments. If you are taking blood thinners or medications that may interfere with clotting of the blood, such as aspirin, you might be more likely to have bruising or bleeding at the injection site.

Q:  Can I do anything to help reduce the risk of these side effects?

A: Yes, we ask that clients scheduled for treatment avoid the use of over the counter medications (i.e. aspirin, ibuprofen etc.) that can thin the blood for 10 days prior to treatment UNLESS these medications are prescribed by your physician.

Q:  I have a big event planned, when should I schedule a filler treatment in order to look my best for the event?

A: Although fillers offer immediate results you may experience some swelling and bruising as a result of treatments.  Giving yourself 1 month prior to the event will allow you the time necessary to heal from the procedure and adjust to your great new look!
